Practical 5

Habitat selection

We have spent a lot of time looking at how two animal or plant populations grow together either facilitatively or competitively. The equations that model these interactions have, at most, considered only two species within a community, however, ecologists and conservation practitioners often need to have a broader perspective of the community. This practical will be the first of four practicals where we will initially model how species react to different types of habitats. Then we will move on to understanding how two or more species interact with their environment.

In this practical we will explore how a species selects a suitable habitat to live in from several possible habitat types. We will also explore how habitat usage could shift between several habitat types through time.
